Mission Impossible & Kabuki's

Being without a car for a few weeks in LA is such an interesting experience.
The buses are weird. The people on the buses are weird. Even the bus drivers can be weird.
But it is helping me to do more walking and get more exercise.

So today, when I had plans to meet friends at the Arcight , I decided to do something that I would not recommend that any single woman in LA do :
I walked straight down Sunset Blvd.
Starting in Los Feliz, all the way down to Sunset and Vine.

I gave myself an hour. And I was really surprised when it only took me a little over a half hour.
Even stopping and taking a few pics, or standing in the shade for a second.

And walking down Sunset Blvd wasn't that bad.
No one really bothered me or harassed me - which I had expected.
Instead the bad part about it where the sections of Sunset that were Dirty and Stinky.

It seems certain blocks are old and just don't clean up after themselves.
And other blocks are new and clean and pretty.
So I held my nose as I walked through the stinky parts.

Arriving at Sunset and Vine nearly a half hour early to meet me friends - I headed over to the Coffee Bean .
I got an LA Times and an Iced Frappacino - which I am sure completely un-did the slimming results of my walk down Sunset.

I called my friends on my cell phone, and ended up meeting up with them over at the Arclight.
We bought our tickets, and headed then headed over to Kabuki's Japanese Restaurant for lunch.
I ordered a Seafood Salad which was alittle strange. It was green salad, topped with a crab salad, which was good.
But it also was topped with a weird potato salad that I didn't know if I liked or not.

After we ate, we headed back over to the Arclight Dome, to see Mission Impossible .
We sat in the first row of the balcony which was perfect.

After it was over, my friend asked what I thought about the movie.
"Well it was loud", I said.

And yes, my friend drove me home. I wasn't walking back up Sunset Blvd.

Doctors Appointment

I had a "short" appointment scheduled with the Breast Surgeon today.
No tests. Just a check-up.

Every once in a while I freak out, and think I feel a lump somewhere.
And I worry that the cancer is back.

Always, the cause is that I am drinking way to much coffee.
This causes cysts to form. But then they go away.

The doctors suggest no more than one cup a day.
It is closer to one pot per day.
I've just been sipping on a cup all day long.

Okay, back off the roller-coaster. I need to try to at least cut the coffee consumption in half.

Other than my coffee problems, every thing looked a-okay.

We scheduled my "Big" tests for August.
That will be my One year mark.
Mammogram, ultra-sound.
I will need some blood work as well.

As we were scheduling the mammogram, I said "I want both breasts done."
The doctor said "You don't need both breasts done. You only had cancer in the left one."
"No, no - I need both." I insist.

The doctor said she noted it on the form for the Radiation Dept. But to be prepared because they are going to question it.

So much for my holistic, and natural approach to breast cancer.
Just Zap me with radiation so I know for sure that there is nothing there.
At least then I will know.

Excuse me, I need to go take a Co-Vitamin Q10 pill, and my Grape Seed Extract now....

Office Fire Drill

I work in a building that is 20-something stories. In Los Angeles, thats considered a high-rise.
Maybe some newer buildings go into the 30-floor range. Being in an Earthquake area, the higher you go, the more risky it is.

This means that the City of Los Angeles requires the building to do a once-a-year evacuation drill.
Today was it.

The Fire Dept goes floor by floor. And we can hear either the alarm on the floor above or below us going off.
So we know our turn will pretty soon.

Usually, I volunteer to be a Stairwell Monitor or something - so I don't have to go down the stairwell.
I stand there, pretending to be helping "injured" people. And when the fire department checks on the stairwell, I say "We have 2 injured people in the South Stairwell." And they are supposed to radio down to the firetrucks below to come get us.

They say that the doors in the stairwell have a 2 hour time frame before the fire reaches the stairwell.

My floor always passed the Fire Drill with flying colors. We are usually the best. Our fire drill is always well organized.
I just hope it goes that smoothly in the event of a real emergency.

So far, the "real" emergencies have consisted of Microwave mishaps.
Someone puts tin foil in the microwave.
The alarms go off.
Someone hits "2 hours" instead of "20 minutes" on the microwave, then walks away.
Their popcorn bursts into flames.
And the alarms go off.

What is really amazing to me, is that I've heard people who work for other companies in the building, will refuse to participate in the annual fire drill.
Not only is it a $1,000 personal fine to the individual. You have to go to court and stand before a judge.

Anyway, this fire drill went really well.
And the Floor Monitors and Assistants are getting lunch on Friday for helping out.

Its Dead

Well, if you Automobile must be dead - the best place for it to die is right there in the parking space at your apartment.

I kind of laughed when I tried to start it to go to work this morning .... And nothing.

I knew it was coming.

Oh, well, the MTA bus in Los Angeles is always such a fun - uhm, interesting - ride away ...

Kermit and Cassavetes

Over volunteering at The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica for the day.
It was the Childrens Matinee.
And this afternoon it was The Muppets Take Manhattan from 1984.

I will admit, I snuck in to watch most of it.
I love Kermit the Frog and his Friends.
And movies from the 80's bring back such memories....

Then, I stayed in the evening for the John Cassavetes Tribute.
I watched the first movie, Faces .
Then, I caught most of the Q&A with the guest speakers. It was a very insightful talk into the work of Director John Cassavetes.
I just couldn't stay for the second film, after volunteering all day, I was pretty tired.

Okay, I will admit, if I have to choose between a Muppet movie, and a Cassavetes film - I'll choose The Muppets everytime.

Not to mention, the Car was really acting up.
I wasn't sure if I was even going to make it home to Hollywood.
I did make it, but just barely.
