Could I Have Had A Busier Day ?

You would think since its a Saturday off, I would kick back and try to relax.
No, not I.
I ended up from one end of Hollywood to the other.

LA Casting Seminar with casting director, Francine Selkirk and a Panel of guests.

Of course, I am late. (Why am I always the flakey actress?)
I arrive there and I don't want to pay for parking.
My original plans were to hang out in this section of Hollywood all day, so usually I would just pay for parking and then go do something else around that area of town.
But not today, I have to leave once the seminar is over.
So I drive around and around and around.
And I am late for the seminar.
And I end up paying $8 to park for only and hour and a half.

The seminar was very informative. These things always are. I always learn something new when LA Casting has a free seminar.
Then, I dashed out after it is over.

I have an audition for a Student Thesis film over at the American Film Institute .

Which means I have to leave my expensive parking spot, and drive to the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Western.
I had toyed with the idea of jumping on the metro subway so my car could stay parked.
But the idea of walking up that hill on Western to AFI did not thrill me.

Not to mention when I got to the campus, I had to park way at the top of the campus -the only spot there was a parking place.
And walk all the way down to the building where they were having the auditions.
Walk down the hill to the audition.
Walk up the hill to get back to the car.
Yes, I took lots of pics, and they will be appearing somewhere on these pages soon.

Since, I forgot to grab lunch, I was getting alittle cranky.
(How can I be hypoglycemic, and forget lunch ?)
The waiting for my audition wasn't going fast enough for my blood sugar levels.
But once we got inside to audition, it was great fun.

They were pairing character types up for a bar scene.
Since I am so short, they matched me up with 2 different tall guys.
I had to try to grab them around the shoulders and kiss their cheek.
Ha, Ha - I got to kiss two guys in one afternoon.
See why I said it was great fun ?

After walking back up the hill to my car, I drove back to downtown Hollywood - where I had just been.
Determined not to pay another $8 - I parked at the Hollywood and Highland complex. The Egyptian will validate my parking over there, and it will only cost a few bucks.

I ran into Baja Fresh for a quick lunch before I passed out.
And it my haste, I forgot to say "No cheese".
Oh, whatever - I was starving.

Then, off to my volunteer duties at The Egyptian Theatre .
Tonights movie was William Eggleston in the Real World .
I usually am not into documentaries. But this is about a photographer, so I really wanted to see it.

Good that after my busy day, I got to relax with a movie.

Cha Cha Lounge

LA People Connection had yet another fun event.

We met at Cha Cha Lounge in Silverlake for Happy Hour.

There had to be 25 to 30 people who were part of our group. We sat in the back, in an area reserved just for large groups.

Having lived most of my adult life near the beaches in Mar Vista, Venice and Redondo Beach, I look forward to any opportunity to go farther east and explore the City of Los Angeles even more.

Of course, parking is a drag - and the streets are all bumpy and cracked. But I did manage to find a spot right on Glendale Blvd, about 2 blocks away.

After I joined the group in our reserved area, I went to the bar to get a drink.
"Do you have Sparkling Mineral Water - Perrier ?" I asked.

"No sparkling mineral water. Just soda. And alcohol." said the bartender.

"Thats okay, I'll have a glass of chardonnay." I said.
"Oh, by the way, do you serve appetizers ?"

"No, no food" replied the waiter.

"Okay then, just the wine." was my answer.

I hate to date myself - or make myself come off as a goody-two-shoes.
Ok, I'm a goody two shoes, I'll admit it.
I can't remember the last time I was in a Bar, that was just a Bar.

Maybe clubbing it at the Discos in the 80's. Does that count ?

But a place that only serves liquor.
wow, am I out of it or what.

I took my chardonnay and headed back to the group.
I met some interesting people.

A woman who works for a music company that does business with the music company that I work for.
She knew alot of my co-workers, so we had plenty to talk about. And of course, we talked about Music.

And the ex-wife of a popular television actor from a 1960's sit-com. I spent some time showing her how to work her brand new cell phone.

And of all things, two nice guys, with nice regular jobs.

Hey, I was having a great time.

The bartender came over. There was a birthday party that booked the space at 9pm. So our group would have to head out.
I made a pit stop and headed to the ladies room.
The Music-company lady was in the hallway, talking on her cellphone.

I knocked on the bathroom door. "Just a minute", said the woman inside.

I waited, and I waited.
I got on my cell phone.

The Music-company lady walked over and banged loudly on the door.
It sprung open.
Out came the woman inside - who was on her cell-phone !
She was using the bathroom to make a call, she knew someone was waiting.
I could have been there forever.

Well, I should know that if I head out to one of the new hip bars in L.A., everyone will be on their cellphone !

My only regret of the entire evening was that I did not bring my digital camera. Cha Cha Lounge is really originally decorated. Very fun inside.

After the Happy Hour was over, I had time to stop off at Gelson's in Silverlake and do alittle grocery shopping. Now that I know thats there, I will have to visit that store alittle more often. They even had some organic produce alongside the regular produce.

Hmmmm, a night out at a hip L.A. bar, and grocery shopping - okay, I've had a full day.
Not bad for a Goody Two Shoes.

The Three Stooges

I was planning to meet some friends at the Hollywood Heritage Museum for a special evening of Three Stooges short films and a lecture about them.

In the middle of the afternoon, I get a phone call from my two friends.
"Donna, we're stuck in the Valley. Can you take notes for us at the Three Stooges event tonight?"

"Oh, come on, I was going because you were going. I don't want to go by myself." I said.

"Oh, please, oh, Please. We can't make it, and we want the information. Please take notes for us." begged my friends.

Okay, I will go. I will take notes on The Three Stooges .

But first I had to go home and get a heavier sweater. The barn where the Museum is can get pretty cold.
By the time I arrived, the first short was already over, and they had just started the second short.
And the place was packed. Completely full. Alot of people showed up for this event.
The Three Stooges are very popular.

Did you know that there were 6 Three Stooges over the years ?

Larry, Curley, Moe, Shep, Joe And Curley Joe

Curley Moe and Shep were brothers

I continued to take Notes for my friends. The place was dark, because all the information was up on a screen.
My two friends owe me lunch for making me take notes in the dark.

The information I was really interested in was the actual address of the scenes in the movies.
Alot of their shorts seemed to be filmed on Larchmont in the Hollywood area.

The steps in "Three Little Beers" is at 2257 N Fair Oak View Terrace in Silverlake .
And they are Not the same steps that are in the Laurel & Hardy movies.

Another place I want to visit now 1350 N. Cherokee - Its The Fountain they fall into in "Hoi Polloi", and the fountain is dedicated to Rudolph Valentino.

There was alot of information like this given out. Along with a good overview of the early movie studios in Hollywood.

Like a good student, I took notes through-out the entire thing.
Then I emailed the notes to my friends. Of course, they were absolutely thrilled to have so much information on the Three Stooges shorts.

Music Video Audition

I submitted myself on LA Casting for a few casting notices.

I got called in for a 2:45 audition for Reba McEntire's new video.
I took a long lunch at 2:15, and the casting studio was close enough for me to walk to.

There were about 15 woman, and 15 men waiting in the waiting room.
They paired us up together, because we would have to portray a married couple.

The guy they matched me up with, was a tall character actor. Well, he wasn't very tall. But he was average tall.
And considering that I am only 4'10", that can be very funny.
He saw me and blurted out "Oh, your cute !"

Which I think embarrassed him, after he realized what he said in front of everyone in the waiting room.

What then followed was another actress commenting about the height difference, and the three of us getting a good chuckle.

The audition went well, I thought. I think the character actor and I worked together well. And it was easy to follow the Casting Associate's instructions.

As we left, the character actor said a "good-bye and good luck" to me.
And after he was gone, I thought, maybe I should have exchanged phone numbers with him.
Oh, well, to late.

I made the point of dropping a few pictures and resumes in the other mail slots by the front door before I left.

I walked out with another woman who auditioned for the same role.
We talked about how you never know with these things.
Of the commercials I have auditioned for - the small percentage I have actually seen on television - the actress they chose never looks anything like me. Not even my type.

So its important to just go to these auditions and have fun. Use it as a learning experience, if you must.
But don't get your hopes up, no matter how well you did.
You never know what "type" they will go with.

Sci-Fi Short Stories

Tonight, LA People Connection had an event with the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society .

The LASFS hosted an evening of Science Fiction Short Story Readings.
Some of the members read short stories by Theodore Sturgeon , Kage Baker, Robert A. Heinlein .

It was a very interesting evening. The LASFS put out quite the spread, with plenty of appetizers.
And it was really interesting to hear the short stories being read.

I like Science fiction, so I think I will be checking out some of these authors from the Los Angeles Library .

Sunday's Pictures for You

I am just going to post the pictures on the blog, the same day I upload them to Flickr.
Its just to hard to post pictures on the day it was taken.
I usually post to flickr every day or every other day.
And I'm just not organized enough to get it all in sync.
