Beauty and Self-Esteem
The Radiology Technicians had invited me to a special class today called Look Good, Feel Better .
The conversation had gone something like this:
Tech : You are invited to a special make-up and beauty class for the cancer patients.
Me: Uh, huh
Tech : It will be lots of fun. You'll get to experiment with make-up.
Me: Uh, huh
Tech: It will build your self-esteem and make you feel good.
Me: Uh, huh
Tech: We give you over $200 worth of free make-up.
Me : Oh, yeah - sign me up !
So I took my radiation treatment early today. And then I went to the class.
I guess the American Cancer Society feels they can build your self-esteem during your cancer treatment, by layering glop all over your face.
By the time I left there, I don't know how many layers of glop were on my face.
Cleanse
Toner
Moisturize
Sunblock
Make-up with sunblock already in it
Powder
And don't rub any of that in.
Pat, Pat, Pat ....
That was actually pretty good advice.
I can't help but think of all those different items inter-mingling. And all those cosmetic chemicals that aren't supposed to go together because they are by different manufacturers ... they are in a big layer on my face.
I just want to do everything Natural now.
But I have to admit, all of the free make-up was really cool.
I wanted to ask the Volunteer Beauty Consultant if she thought any of the chemicals in the make-up were bad for us now that we have had cancer. Like I have read alot of bad things about Parabens lately.
This is a preservative, that can mimic estrogen when it is absorbed by your body.
(Both Avalon Organics , and Aubrey Organics stay away from Parabens in their products.)
But she was only a volunteer, and she had already stated that she could not give medical advice.
And I was just happy to have all the free make-up.
All of the free make-up is donated by the cosmetic companies for the programs. So I do appreciate it all.
And I did get alot of really nifty stuff:

The difficult part of the class for me, where some of the other cancer patients.
The lady sitting across from me was undergoing chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer.
She had lost all her hair, and was asking the volunteer for advice about what to do since she is missing her eyebrows now.
She asked me "You still have your hair ?"
I said "I am doing radiation for breast cancer. Not chemo."
She said "Oh, Radiation for breast cancer. I have ovarian cancer."
As I walked back to the my car after my class, I couldn't help but feel cancer all around me.
Right now, it seems like its in the air.
In the atmosphere.
Its impossible to escape.
